Newlyweeds
A New York couple finds their relationship may be going up in smoke in this independent comedy. Lyle (Amari Cheatom) and Nina (Trae Harris) are lovers who share an apartment in Brooklyn; he does furniture repossession for a less-than-scrupulous rent-to-own company, she's a tour guide at the Brooklyn Children's Museum. After a long day at work, Lyle and Nina like to head home and relax with some marijuana . . . often a great deal of marijuana. Self-medication has become a bit more than a hobby for Lyle and Nina, and weed helps them avoid the fact that while they love each other, they have very different long term goals they've yet to reconcile. As the couple wanders about in a smoky haze, their leisure time activities begin to have an impact on their professional lives (Lyle takes back furniture from the wrong flat, and bringing the wrong plate of brownies causes Nina to accidentally dose a handful of kids), and their relationship seems poised for a major bummer. Newlyweeds was the first feature film from Shaka King, and was an official selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
